Every January, you think about your New Year’s resolutions for a new and better you.  Have you thought about refreshing your home?  You might not be moving to a different house but you can make your current one better and like new.

Welcome the New Year with a sparkle with these house cleaning resolutions.

  1. Get rid of clutter

We often hold on to items out of sentiment but these things do tend to add up, creating clutter which makes it difficult to locate items you really need.  It’s time to purge your home of anything that isn’t aesthetic or functional.  If you do want to keep your sentimental stuff, have a box, table or area specifically for holding them.

To organize your belongings, sort through them and classify each as either something you use now, something you will use in the future, or something you will likely never use.  Place what you need now somewhere handy and store what you need for the future.  The rest are likely junk or out-dated and should be disposed of or given away.

  1. Safety always first

House CleaningAside from protecting your home from fire and natural disasters, do an inspection of your property for possible health hazards and safety risks.  Replace burned out light bulbs.  Remove objects lying around and roll up electrical cords to avoid people accidentally stumbling or slipping.  Fix exposed wires.  Repair broken furniture, doors, windows or stairways.  If you have small children, install safety devices and child-proof locks.

  1. Set a cleaning schedule and routine

There are simple things you can do daily and weekly to lessen your chores and keep dust from accumulating.  Wash dishes after every meal, don’t let them stay in the kitchen sink overnight.  Dirty clothes should all be in the laundry bin and once the laundry’s done, the clean clothes need to be arranged in the closets.  Take out the trash.  Change your linen weekly.

Also, set goals quarterly and yearly for regular maintenance around your home.  Include professional carpet cleaning in your schedule to protect and prolong your carpet.  Don’t forget about pest control if you have dogs or cats.

  1. Strive for a greener home

Minimize your impact on the environment by conserving energy.  Switch off lights and unplug appliances when not in use.  Consider switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs.  If you only have a few dishes to wash, try washing them by hand instead of using the dishwasher.  Fix leaky faucets.  If the sun is up, dry your clothes on the line instead of running the dryer.

With the new year comes a fresh and new outlook for yourself, your family and your house.  Improve your home by following these New Year’s house cleaning resolutions and enjoy a cleaner, easier and healthier life the whole year through.
