At the end of a long, tiring day, we all look forward to getting into bed for a good night’s sleep. But, do you know the health hazards hiding in your bed everyday? Aside from bed bugs and dust mites, studies have proven that bacteria can be found in mattresses and they’re responsible for some of the allergies and sickness we suffer. This is why regular mattress cleaning is important. Caring for your mattress also extends its life.
Here are some of the things you can do to once again get that clean and fresh mattress:
1. Use the vacuum cleaner
Sweep a garment steamer over the surface of the mattress to exterminate any concealed dust mites. Vacuum the entire mattress carefully, including the top, bottom and sides, to remove dirt, dust and other bugs.
One of the simplest products for deodorizing anything is found in your kitchen – baking soda. Spread some baking soda on your mattress, give it at least 15 minutes, then remove the baking soda by vacuuming it. You can also use a disinfecting spray to kill other germs and give your bed a nice scent.
3. Flip it
Flip and rotate your mattress every three months or so, to prolong its life and reduce body impressions, which will help the mattress stay even.
4. Stains begone
For urine, vomit and other bodily fluids, blot up the spill as much as you can then take your mattress out and let it lie in the sun for at least a day. Exposing your mattress to sunlight also works well for mould and mildew stains. Then you can use a disinfecting spray, or baking soda, to banish unpleasant odours.
However, this method is only good for light, small stains. For heavy stains and widespread mildew damage, you will need to consult a professional.
