Finding your room flooded is an absolute carpet nightmare. In cases like these, you can either restore your carpet or replace it. If you want to avoid the expense of changing your carpet, then you need to act immediately because a carpet that has been flooded for more than 24 hours will need to be replaced.
So what can you do to save your flooded carpet?
Identify the type of water.
Knowing what kind of water has saturated your carpet is vital to determining the potential health risk. One you’ve figured out the kind of water, it is also easier to pinpoint the location of the leak.
Water coming from your pipes or rainwater that leaked into your home are considered uncontaminated water. The carpet will still need to be sanitized and disinfected but it is not necessary to replace the carpet.
Dishwater, toilet water and flood water (water that has touched the ground) are all regarded as dirty water. Extraordinary precautions have to be taken in disinfecting the carpet. For a severely damaged carpet which presents a significant health risk, such as those tainted by sewage, you might need to consider replacing your carpet.
Block the source of the leak.
To avoid more damage, you need to fix the leak right away. If the job is too much for you, you can hire a tradesperson. Make sure to wear protective clothing like boots and gloves if you’re going to come into contact with the water.
Remove or extract excess water.
Do whatever is necessary to drain the water from the room. If there is too much water, special water extraction equipment should be used. The carpet needs to dry within 12 hours to avoid bacteria growth and permanent damage.
Dry the carpet.
To expedite the drying process, remove the carpet from the flooring and lift it. The carpet padding or cushion will need to be disposed of. Take the carpet outdoors to dry under the sun, making sure to turn the carpet to allow drying on both sides. If you cannot bring the carpet outside, keep the carpet raised and use fans set on high. If the carpet cannot be removed, just aim some fans and keep them running until the carpet is completely dry. Inform everyone to avoid stepping on the carpet in the meantime.
